Braff State - GG

Tragically there is no Soccerroos v Uruguay on free-to-air this weekend but Pene Cruz does star in an Italian drama, Don’t Move (Wed 10P) in SBS’ cult movie spot.
GG pick of the week is Garden State (Sun 7 1030P) which was written, directed and stars Zach Braff (TV’s Scrubs). Braff’s character is addicted to drugs, moves home to live with his wealthy father and teams up with Natalie Portman (“sweet-crazy-sexy”). A brutally honest take on modern America ? Peter Travers describes it as “a hilarious and heartfelt ode to twenty-something angst.” RT likes it at 87%.
And in a revisit of 80’s culture, memories and highlights, Moonlighting (Cybill Shepherd and a brand new Bruce Willis) is on every day at 11A (channel 7) with the pilot ep. tomorrow (Friday).

What I Did In The Holidays - Volver

Volver : Pedro Almodovar is rightly regarded as one of Spain’s greatest film directors. With previous titles, Talk To Her and All About My Mother, both quite dark in mood, Almodovar signalled a change in attitude with Volver. Fun, colourful and a (mostly) happy ending allow the cast of women, headed by Penelope Cruz, to do what women do best : talk to each other.
It is true that Cruz, speaking her native tongue and asked to perform roles with which she has some affinity, demonstrates a capable acting range. Aided by padded hips and a push-up bra, displays real woman curves for the first time and young master rabel might have to compete for her attention! Almodovar, a gay man with a love for “the women that raised him,” loves breasts and one key shot of Cruz, leaning over the sink, is a testament to women, their breasts and everything that we love about them. Perhaps it is also instructive to note that Cruz was cleaning a bloodied knife while we were ogling her? These women are capable.
By populating a film solely with women (the men are dispatched early on in proceedings), Almodovar tells the story of a family of women loving, encouraging and confronting each other. All in all it is quite good but never quite gets to “great” for me.

What's On

While the CommGames draw to a close on Sunday night, “An exhibition of pride, unity and goodwill, to bring the 2006 Commonwealth Games to a close, hosted by Ray Martin,” Saturday night delivers a bevy of boobs (not to mention the ubiquitous True Lies on channel repeat), Eyes Wide Shut (9 Sat 11P) and Volaverunt (SBS Sat 945P) : don’t know much about this one but it does star P.Cruz as one of Goya’s models so if there’s no accounting for taste …
Get the video tape in for the kiddies on channel 7 over the weekend : The Barbie Diaries, Pocahontas, Mulan, Ice Age and Dr Dolittle 2.
And finally The Wall (9 Sun 12midnight) the synopsis described thus :
“A touching trio of stories inspired by three mementos left at the base of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. The first is "The Pencil Holder", the story of a strict father who is deeply changed when his young son befriends a dying soldier. The second is "The Badge", about a young man (Glover) who enlists, just as his father and Grandfather did before him. His grandmother gives him the badge, a family heirloom, for good luck. The final story is "The Player", in which a cynical soldier rethinks his ways after being paired with a comrade who has volunteered for three straight tours of duty.”

For Sean ...

No News From God (Thur SBS 1030P) starring (who else) but Pigdog Cruz. “Cruz’s dancing to Kung-Fu Fighting is generally regarded as the highpoint.” RT only gives it a 38% but when you’re a fan, you’re a fan.
